A lovely image, by Reutlinger, of the beautiful actress Jane Henriot, who, at the age of 19, died in the terrible fire which all but consuned the famous Theatre Francais on March 8, 1900. Probably this card was published before that date, as popular images of her published after her death, (that we have seen), usually identify her as the victim of that tragedy.

Jane was the illegitimate daughter of the actress Marie Grossin, who was apparently known, in those days, as Madame Henriot. It has been suggested by some researchers that Madame Henriot, (the mother), was the model for a number of portraits by Pierre Auguste Renoir, the famous impressionist painter, and not being historians, we accept this at face value, but it has also been suggested that this Jane Henriot, (of our postcard), was the subject of Renoir's "Young Girl in a Blue Hat." As to that, we can only scratch our heads and ask, "How could a Renoir portrait, painted of a young girl aged ten or eleven in 1881, have been painted of "this" Jane Henriot, who was born in 1878, and who at the time the portrait was painted could have been no more than three or four years old? Aren't mysteries fun?

Anyway, the card is in very nice condition. Please examine our high res scans.
