Victorian Era Print in Gilded Gesso Frame - James Arthur

Sweet Victorian print and frame. The print is by James Arthur and is of a charming lady with a tiered lacy dress and shawl, a bonnet with pink roses, who is knocking on the door of a house. The doorway has a flowered vine arched over it. Most of the color is a sepia tone with touches of pink. It looks as though this is a print that may have some hand coloring -- some touches of pink, yellow and green seem to have been added to the original print. I see one little scratch and a couple of small splotches that may or may not have been part of the original artwork.

James Arthur most likely created the original artwork sometime near the turn of the century. This print looks to be very old so it probably also dates from around that time. Arthur was known as an illustrator, especially calendar art, and especially for his paintings/prints of Indian maidens. “Copyright James Arthur” is printed in script on the left at the bottom of the steps.

The frame is a little chippy but I love it. It’s gilded gesso and has a very architectural look with lots of details. There is some damage to the frame (as mentioned), no glass or backing (other than cardboard).

Note: We have added a saw tooth hanger so that it is ready to be hung.

Size: 9” high x 7” wide (print), 10-½” x 7” (frame)
