Melville Bissell created this sweeper to appease his wife Anna from her irritation with keeping the carpet in their Michigan crockery shop clean. They patented the design in 1876.

This worn-patina sweeper still picks up dirt, forwards or backwards. The wheels are a bit mishapen and it squeaks, but so did the one that my grandma used (we called it a hokey), frankly so do the ones that they still use at Shari's restaurants late at night.
