Antique pewter lidded jug or pitcher by James Dixon & sons, Sheffield. This is a nicely shaped jug which bellies out in the middle. It has a hinged lid with a knob that is shaped to make it easy to pull back with the thumb. The front of the lid has a notch out of it to allow liquid to be poured without opening the lid. It's marked on the bottom James Dixon & Sons, Sheffield which dates it to around the 1870s although there is also an 85 which may date it to 1885.

The jug measures 7¾ins (19.5cm) tall and is 3¼ins (8.5cm) in diameter across the bottom. It is in good vintage condition - it has some dents from usage around the belly but this adds to it character rather than detracting. It has also developed a nice patination and softness to it that only age can bring.
