Beautiful Vintage engraving of famous horse training scene from JunqueGypsy.Etsy.com is just in time for your Kentucky Derby party decor. And it has been marked down from $228.

This detailed equestrian engraving is from the work entitled L'Instruction du Roy en L'Exercice de Monter a Cheval authored by Antoine Pluvinel. Pluvinel was a master of horsemanship who is known for establishing more humane ways of treating the animals than his contemporaries' method of spurs and whips. After training in Italy, he brought the new art of equestrian dressage back to his native Paris and established the French school of horsemanship. Pluvinel became the instructor to many of the royal family of France, including the future King Louis XIII. In 1623, three years after his death, some of Pluvinel's annotations on this art were published along with engravings completed by the artist Crispin de Pas, the younger (aka Chrispijn de Passe II) in a work entitled Le Manège Royal. Two years later, a more complete, edited version of the work containing the engravings by de Pas was published by Menou de Charnizay and given the new title of L'Instruction du Roy en L'Exercice de Monter a Cheval. This later work was tanslated and reissued numerous times. Most of the engravings in the work feature Pluvinel in an instructional position with the King either taking instruction or looking on as others do. The engraved lines of de Pas's work are very detailed and finely tuned.

This is a beautiful copy of the one of the book's engravings (figure 23) complete with the famous annotations by Pluvinel (Similar copies of engravings from this horse training classic listed for amounts ranging from $350--w/no matting framed in cheap black metal--up to $10,000, depending upon the gallery, framing quality, and whether or not they were hand colored.) ****The former head of the Graphic Artists Engineering Workshops in Uppsala has indicated to me that this appears to be hand colored, which would make it far higher in value than my asking price. But I did not want to take the backing off and dismantle the framing in order to verify the hand coloring estimate. So I will leave that step to the buyer, and price it without the higher grade in quality that would indicate.

This particular beautifully framed version hung in formal living room of a beautiful Dutch Colonial home for decades.

Professionally framed behind glass in wood with gold and blue beveling and dark gold velvet matting. Measures 24 X 20.25" overall, with engraving behind glass at 15.5 X 12". Back is paper covered with eye hooks and picture hanging wire. Original purchase tag attached: Catalda Fine Arts, Inc. Title: Riding Horses Artist: Pluvinel Frame No SA210 Order No 4909.

This would be a thoughtful gift for an equestrian, horse trainer, jockey, or stable owner.

Please Etsy e-mail me if you would like more photos or information. (There is a bit of glare from the glass in some of the photos.) I don't feel as if I was able to capture the depth of perception that is shown in the scene with my cheap camera.

No smoker, pet, musty odor (These are vintage items, though, so they are at least 20 years old. I will specify, if there is a noticeable musty odor.)
