Another remnant from my mother's sewing room...a masterpiece of sewing and embroidery and little circles of mirror to make the piece complete. This is one of a series of yardage pieces that my mom bought when she visited me in London in the late 1970s. The stalls in the underground that used to be everywhere and are now closed up due to security concerns, were full of these pieces of handmade works from the ladies of India. London was the place to buy any and all of these beautiful pieces, and my mother took full advantage of her treasure finds!

The piece measures 30 inches by 80 inches and is really two pieces that are 80 inches long. The top piece is dyed cotton and has a few embroidered discs and animals. Below that piece, stitched by hand in what looks like basting stitches, is the real art!

The bottom panel is just chock-a-block with embroidered flowers, geometric designs, little mirrored piece stitched onto the fabric, thick stitches that edge the piece and each strip of design. This is a vintage piece -- READ USED-- and has some of the little mirror pieces broken or missing. The piece was used in my mother's living room, draped over sofas and chairs, and in her art studio, where she used the designs as inspiration for her art.

There are other pieces like this one, but this is also unique...as any handmade, handsewn piece would be. I have tried to photograph the piece from front, back and edges. The top edge is selvedge, the bottom edge is embroidered hem, but the sides are cut and raw edges.

The piece weighs over a pound, so the flat rate priority boxes are my usual go-to option. If you give me your zip code, perhaps the pound weight to your local would be cheaper. Let me know if you have questions or would like to combine orders to save postage (always a good idea). RetroBroad
