A pretty 17" Kuchi necklace with lapis lazuli gemstone from Afganistan. Most unusual style, in a handmade setting. This is real lapis. Rough as when mined.

The setting is not silver but it is a lookalike. They call it gypsy, German or gilt silver. The traditional form of making jewelry pieces was by melting down coins so while I know it has some silver content I have no idea how much. The small brown beads inter spaced throughout are rosewood.

The necklace was hand made by Kuchi Pashtuns, a nomadic peoples in what is now Afghanistan. It's probably from the Logar region.

All of these pieces are unique.

Kuchi is an Afghan word meaning those who go on migrations. Kuchis are Pashtun nomads who have maintained their traditional nomad lifestyle for more than 3000 years.

This jewellery is tribal jewellery and made by hand. Some of the stones are a little rough - just don't expect total perfection. But there are no rough edges on the setting at all.

Wear it with your little black dress!
