☼ This is not a mass produced "batik" fabric but in fact, a TRULY unique batik print that has been hand "painted" with wax, and hand dyed. This is why true batik is much more expensive than tie dye. It requires a great deal of time, work, and attention to detail. Our prices are extremely low considering the time and effort put into these pieces of wearable art. ♥

Information on the method of batik:

Batik is a wax resist method of dying fabric that goes back at least 1500 years, and is an art form that has been highly developed in Indonesia. A combination of beeswax and paraffin is "painted" on natural fabrics such as cotton or silk using various brushes or a drawing tool called a "tjanting." Wherever the fabric has been covered with wax, that color remains when dyed with fiber reactive cold water dyes, through subsequent waxing and dying. Because of the numerous dye baths, color combinations must be taken into consideration. Unique effects are created and cracking is produced when enough paraffin wax is used and the dyes creep into the design. For these reasons, no two batiks are alike...they are truly unique and one of a kind!!! Removing wax takes time, as the fabric must be boiled, the water cooled, and the hardened wax removed. Then the fabric is ironed to remove any vestiges of wax, laundered, and ironed once again. This is why batiks cost more than mass produced fabric designs. Batik is truly special :)

An interesting note: The Javanese phrase for the mystical experience of making batik is "mbatik manah," which means "drawing a batik design on the heart." This is truly how I feel when I create an original design.
