This UMWA medal is rare. I could not find one quite like it anywhere! It appears to be from 1898 and commemorates the implementation of the 8 hour work day. The colorful pieces attached to the metal are celluloid. I have learned that Whitehead & Hoag Co. developed and patented celluloid. The company was in business 1892-1921 and made numerous medals featuring advertising, political campaign content, and fraternal items. Many medals I found like this had a ribbon that hung behind the brass (?) pieces and would normally say what union chapter or occasion the medal was for. See picture 4 - there is a hanger of sorts for the ribbon underneath the pin that would secure the medal to a jacket or shirt. The large medal has the following written on it "UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL. IN UNION THERE IS STRENGTH".

The celluloid has some darkening and marking. The back of the brass medal has some dings and marks, but nothing that detracts from the overall appearance.

The size of the medal is about 2 1/2" x 2 1/4". The rectangular celluloid piece at the top measures 2 1/2" x 3/4".

You can't help but feel as though you are touching a little bit of history when holding this piece!

This item ships with insurance.

Since I could not find another medal like this, my price is an estimate based on similar items for sale on various venues. I would be willing to consider serious offers if you have a different price in mind.
