Here's an extraordinary antique glass fishing float, showing rich character and lovely 'movement' in the hand blown collectible glass. This one has been named 'Summer Monsoon', dedicated to the need for a small 'monsoon' or big rain - which is now required in the mid-West of our beautiful country, to save the crops from total drought and help our valued farmers. In real time, this pretty float looks like liquid rain. Holding it in the palm of the hand, one can almost feel the energy of big rain, even big waves. The individual aspects found within the blown glass are outstanding.

Summer Monsoon measures 3-1/2" diameter or 10-5/8" in circumference, typically referred to by collectors as 'baseball' size, for quick, easy reference. The top of the float (technically the 'bottom' where blowing began, yet the 'top' as the float normally sits) shows a large 'worm' in the glass, amidst a vortex of swirling. The float actually shows its own little 'crown halo' - a bit like an old fashioned kaleidoscope and it's fun to gaze through the float!

The high quality antique glass has wonderful thickness and weight to it. It's loaded with bubbling of all sizes and types, from rain drop bubbles, to tear drops - and little champagne type bubbles light up when the float is held directly to a light source. There's a good sized 'space window' or 'burst' bubble near the equatorial area on one side. A little 'storm' appears in the glass to the right of that burst surface bubble, resembling a minor explosion in space. The very edge of the 'burst' bubble can be seen way down to the left, bottom of the float in photo #4. Of course, this burst bubble is fully intact. Amazing the float would serve decades at sea with no difficulties with the glass clearly being a bit thinner in that particular spot. I often think they resemble tiny 'windows' into 'space'.

Photo #2 nicely demonstrates some of the beautiful swirling in the glass, as well as the 'liquid' rain, or many bubbles and movement within the glass. The last photo shows some of the tiny champagne bubbling as it's over-exposed, allowing the light to pass through and show up other characteristics - one of which - is a small surface scratch on the side of the float. Other than that, the antique glass is in marvelous condition, showing far less wear than most 'fished' floats. The glass exhibits rich luster with high sheen. Note the five 'ghost net' pattern markings shown in the first two photos. These appear on just one side of the float and remind of the clouds one would expect to see during a heavy rain, which fits beautifully for Summer Monsoon.

The seal 'button' glows with a rich gloss! What a great artifact. This seal is thick glass in a large oval shape, showing thoughtful crafting and good placement. The surround edge on the seal is in MINT condition - no chips, no nicks or grazing to the edge. The signed mark can be seen readily in photo #3. It's a wonderful clear strike mark in the form of an Arabic numeral '6'.

The Arabic numerals 1 through 6 were commonly used to mark floats. There are a handful of other numbers that were thought to be uncommonly used or even rare. However, only about 20% of floats were marked. Often marks or parts of marks are missing or morphed, disappeared into the warm glass. This one is a fine clear strike. If the number '6' has special meaning for you, a friend or loved one, Summer Monsoon might be a lovely gift. Or....if you're at a loss regarding the number, use it as an opportunity to make 6 wishes!
