I've named this cow "Bessie" so I know which cow I'm dealing with... I have a black angus cow design, as yet un-named. Helps me keep my orders straight ... I thought a cow was "dairy-esque", appropriate for a butter dish... Bessie is part of my "barnyard" line of photos for my pots. Included with the crock is a handmade clay spreader knife / paddle. Sold separately my clay knives have a $12 price tag, only $5 when included with the butter crock. If you don't care to have a knife (it really does add to the pot as a whole:)) i will refund $5.00 via paypal or stick a "5 spot" in with the order when I'm wrapping it up for shipping. Not a problem!

For those of you unfamiliar with the concept of the french butter crock, "FBC" as I call them, here it is. It's a low-tech way to keep your butter soft, spreadable, and fresh, all without refrigeration. Simply pack your butter tightly into the tube and put enough water in the bottom part to form a seal. Air, the culprit for turning butter rancid, is kept away from the butter by the water. Change the water every few days, keep out of direct sunlight, there you have it. Soft spreadable butter all ready for your toast. I've heard that if you use unsalted butter it's a good idea to put a pinch of salt in the water below. These really do work. And besides, when not in use you get to look at a pretty cool handmade crock on your countertop instead of a rock-hard stick of butter in your fridge :)

This guy measures 4½ inches tall and 5½ across from handle to handle. The tube part where you pack the butter holds almost 8 ozs, which translates to 2 sticks or so? (each stick of butter is 4 oz). Instructions are included in case you forget what do with this rather strange looking pot, or are planning to give it as a gift.
