I love scented candles, they fill my home with a lovely aroma, however, they are pretty boring to look at. My solution? A tall candle holder that will accommodate a pillar or jar candle. To add to the interest, it goes through the raku firing process to give it its unique colorations.

This a variation of the original thrown piece, it’s actually a sleeve designed to slip over a jar candle; there is no bottom, as shown in the last photo. This one is oval to encase both round and oval candles with a geometric design cut out around the piece to reflect the light of the candle when lit.

It is then bisque fired to remove any moisture and to prepare it for the final raku firing, an ancient technique first developed in the 16th century. Bisque ware is coated in specially formulated glaze then quickly fired until the glaze takes on a glossy appearance. I actually made my raku kiln out of a trash can lined with a ceramic blanket to keep the heat in and a whole in the lid to observe the atmosphere inside. Once glossy, the pieces are removed and transferred to other trash cans filled with shredded newspaper, leaves and sawdust and closed so that they can smoldered for 15 minutes, after which they are removed and transferred to a bucket of cold water to set the glaze. Opening the trash can after the second “smoldering” is always an exciting experience, the bold colors and imprints left by the materials results in a truly one of a kind piece.

This piece measures 7 ½”” x 7”, the candles in the photo are for demonstration purposes only, they are not included with the piece.

Thanks for looking!
