This is a last set of handmade ceramic beads, created using the slip-glazing technique. I hand formed the beads from white fine stoneware, pressed in the patterns, then painted on them with a special brown earthenware paste. I included iron and copper oxides into the mix, which gave the clay unexpected colours.

These are the last such beads I made, and no similar beads will be on sale for at least a few months.

After the first firing I glazed them with a clear crackle glaze and fired again. During the second firing, the iron and copper oxides melted in the glaze, giving it wonderful peacock colours. These glazes are completely harmless: these oxides are the same compounds that constitute green verdigris patina on weathered copper or brass.

This process is totally experimental, because I never know how the beads will come out. The clay paste has a rough texture, but the transparent glaze on top of it makes them glossy and pleasant to touch.
The dark green and brownish clay paste on the beads reminds me of moss and lichen, or a fir forest in blueish mist. They are really unique and earthy, I imagine they would look perfect with silver, clear glass beads or copper. Perfect for a special necklace or even earrings.

See the last photo for scale -- the coin shown is a little more than 2 cm wide. The larger beads are hollow and much more lightweight than they seem.
