I am selling off a collection of 1920s-1930s Tokanabe Ware Made in Japan pottery pieces.

Tokanabe was mold-pressed pottery, made in Japan for the US market in the 1920's and 30's. Tokanabe is typically black with a stippled texture and hand-painted raised relief designs. It was distributed through "Five and Dime" Stores like Woolworth's and through the Sears Company catalog between 1929 and 1930. Many an American bride received a piece or two of Tokanabe as a wedding gift during this period! Information on specific potters, painters, or manufacturers is unfortunately no longer available. Most pieces were unmarked except for the "Made in Japan" mark. It was stamped Nippon until 1921, when the US Congress passed legislation requiring all products manufactured in Japan for export to the United States to be marked Made in Japan.

Here we have a beautiful Tokanabe ware flower vase wall pocket with raised Japanese landscape design of Asian Pagodas, mountains and trees which are hand-painted in red with gold gilt accents scales.

The wall pocket measures 6-1/2" long and is 2-3/4" wide at top and 2" deep. It is marked on the reverse with the impressed mark "MADE IN JAPAN" as well as a smaller mark which resembles a cross with 2 horizontal lines.

Condition of the vase is very good with minimal paint wear and a couple minor old flea bites around the opening. Not too bad for a piece of this age.

Overall a beautiful piece for your collection of wall pockets or tokanabe pottery! Don't forget to view my store for many other unique vintage pottery pieces. I will be selling off all of the pieces listed in the final photograph.

Thanks for looking!
