This 1880 copy of "The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table - Every Man His Own Boswell" by Oliver Wendell Holmes is a lovely evocation of the late Victorian Era. Its small size, (approximately 4" x 6" or what was known back then as 18vo) was handy for slipping into one's pocket or purse. It's a handsome little book, decorated with blind-stamped designs and lettered in gold.

The book, which is Holmes's most enduring work - and his most popular, consists of a series of fictional essays, supposedly written by an unnamed resident of a boarding house, which recount his morning dialogues with other residents of the house. No one is named - each character being known by their profession or position at the table. it is all quite humorous in a Yankee sort of way - and a great variety of subject matters are touched upon. Each section ends with a poem dealing with the subject at hand, supposedly written by the various fictional residents. American literature could hardly be complete without the Breakfast Autocrat and his wit and perspicacity.
