This print is part of Katsushika Hokusai's series "A Large Fish," which was created in the 1830s. In Japan, the carp is a symbol of perseverance and determination, as it is known for its ability to swim against strong currents and leap up waterfalls. The carp is also associated with the celebration of Children's Day in Japan, which takes place on May 5th each year. On this day, families often display colorful carp-shaped streamers, known as koinobori, outside their homes.

Katsushika Hokusai was a Japanese artist and printmaker who is widely considered to be one of the greatest masters of ukiyo-e, a style of Japanese art that flourished during the Edo period (1603-1868). He is best known for his series of woodblock prints called "The Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji," which includes the iconic image of a giant wave off the coast of Japan, known as "The Great Wave."

Hokusai's work has had a lasting impact on the art world, and his iconic images continue to be widely recognized and admired. Today, he is considered one of the greatest Japanese artists of all time, and his work is exhibited in museums around the world.
