This teapot has a contemporary feel. It holds 20 oz., and measures 6" in height to the top of the lid and 6" spout to handle, the opening is 2.75" dia. The long flange of the lid keeps it securely in place when pouring, yet is easy to grab. It has a sturdy handle and a spout with straining holes.

This piece in wheel thrown and made of a mid-fire porcelain. The inside of the teapot is glazed clear and the outside is glazed a lovely transparent amber. A cicada is featured on each side, both are hand painted in black underglaze using a graphite transfer process.

The Beetle and Bug collection of pottery features designs inspired by some of my favorite insects. In Japan cicadas are seen as a symbol of reincarnation since it molts when it emerges from the ground leaving behind an empty shell. To attract females, male cicadas use the loud noisemakers on the sides of their abdomen called tymbals. Contracting and relaxing the internal tymbal muscles produces a clicking sound, the hollow interior of the abdomen amplifies their song. Cicadas can also symbolize evanescence since some species only live long enough to attract a mate with its song and procreate. However, the life cycle of the Magicicadia in North America can be 13 to 17 years long, most of it lived underground. When the cicadas emerge they do so en masse.

All my pieces are food, microwave and dishwasher safe, though they prefer hand washing.

This design is part of an open edition collection. The piece pictured may not necessarily be the piece you receive. As with most handmade work slight variations are natural.
