“It is well to remember that there are five reasons for drinking: the arrival of a friend, one's present or future thirst, the excellence of the wine, or any other reason.” - Latin Proverb

This fantastic rustic crate and carboy is an outstanding piece that would make a unique focal point in a cabin, cottage, or vineyard's decor. We were informed by the person from whom we acquired the piece that her grandparents worked in a California winery in the 1930s and 1940s and that they took this from the winery to use as decor when they opened their own liquor store.

While we can't really verify that story, we believe this carboy dates to at least the early 1900s. The glass has many imperfections that appear as small bubbles beneath the surface of the glass. The bottle has a visible seam where the two molded halves were melded together. The rim was added last and it seems clear it was added by hand. The old cork is a great addition to this piece that is fairly uncommon to still be with the jug. There is a marking on the bottom of the jug that is very difficult to see - it either says "PCCo" or "PGCo." The patina on the wood crate is a fantastic rusty brown. The crate is somewhat fragile but has held together for a long time and is still in good condition. There is no visible writing on the crate.

The carboy measures approximately 10" in diameter and is approximately 22" tall. We believe it holds approximately 5 gallons. The wood crate measures approximately 12" x 12" x 16".
