GENERAL INFORMATION:

Thyme, or Thymus vulgaris, is also known as Garden Thyme, Common Thyme, and Cooking Thyme.

An aromatic herb in the mint family, thyme grows to a height of fifteen inches (about 40 cm), with small rounded leaves and pink flowers on woody stems.

Today the plant is common throughout North America, but it originated in the southern Mediterranean.

FOLKLORE / FOOD / FUN FACTS:

--Typical Preparation: Teas, tinctures, baths, gargles, toothpaste.

--Experts in language tell us that thyme's name was derived form the Greek word thumus, or courage. In Medieval times, knights wore sprigs of thyme on their armor as a sign of courage. The scent of thyme was thought to give them strength in the midst of battle.

--Thyme was used by the ancient Egyptians as one of the herbs included in the mummification process (for its purification qualities), and by the ancient Greeks as an incense. The Romans burned thyme to purify rooms, and also used it to flavor cheese and liqueurs.

--The fragrance and flavor of thyme leaves have long been a favorite of cooks for seasoning meats, soups, and stews. Thyme is especially common in Mediterranean and French cuisine, and is an ingredient in the seasoning blend herbes de Provence.

--Today, oil of thyme is the main ingredient in the mouthwash Listerine.

MYSTIC / MAGIC / CRAFT USE:

--According to Magical Lore, Thyme is associated with loyalty, affection, the good opinion of others, strength, courage, protection, comfort, cleansing, luck, and money.

--Magical Beliefs and Practices:
Burn or hang in the home for banishing negativity, purification, and to attract well-being.

Use in cleansing baths prior to working candle magic. Use in dream pillows to inspire rest and good dreams.

Place in a jar and keep in the home or at work for good luck.

To bring money, plant Thyme in the garden, and as it grows, so will wealth.

Or, take a dollar bill, fold it around thyme leaves, fold it again to make a packet, tie it up with green thread, and bury the packet in the middle of a crossroads on the night of the Full Moon.

--Uses: incense, sachet, dream pillow, mojo bag, protective sprinkle or floor wash, infused oil, etc.
