I love the dark colors in this piece ≈ the raw amethyst stone has a deep purple luster and the wire and chain are a very dark glittering metal. I do lots of work with natural stones, I love working with raw crystals. This stone measures 40mm and is wire wrapped at the top with fine gauge gunmetal wire. It hangs on a diamond faceted chain, 1.2mm, very fine. I love the faceted chain, it gives this piece so much sparkle even with the darkness of the gunmetal.
The chain measures 18" plus a 2" extender chain.

Amethyst has long been prized as for it's beauty and talismanic virtues. One of it's common ancient applications was to prevent drunkenness and break addictive patterns. The word amethyst comes from the Greek word 'amethystos', meaning non-intoxicating.
The name apparently found it's origin in a myth where Dionysus (the god of wine) harassed a young nymph while in his drunken state, forcing her to call on a passing goddess to turn her to stone to escape his advances. It's said that his spilled wine and tears of remorse mingled to turn the stone a deep purple color.
Amethyst is said to grant a deep understanding, and has been called the stone of spirituality and contentment. They're thought to have a soothing and relaxing effect on people, promoting healthy sleep habits and in some cases apparently curing insomnia.
Known as a stone of change, amethyst can bring about any type of change needed to shift your life and awareness. It's also thought break up old emotional processes and assist in opening to new chapters of life.
