Polychrome & Wood Bird Mask from Bali, Indonesia

I collected this for the Museum thirty years ago in San Francisco, in a treasure trove near Aquatic Park called Xanadu.

Mythical elements combine here, with the typical characteristics of a bird. The beak for instance, with its rows of "mythical" teeth.

It comprises a central single piece of light wood.

Bird masks are used in Bali to perform several characters from the Hindu epics. Jatayu, who tries to rescue Sita from the demon Rawana, is one such example.

Size: 9 1/2" long / 7" high / 6" wide
