This is a special mala to me. It is colourful and carefully handmade using 108 polished orange and brown wood beads, spaced using silver heishi in a lovely combination. What makes it special are the rare turquoise Kazuri beads. There is also one sterling silver bead with an engraved lotus. It can be used as a yoga or meditation mala, or even as a layered bracelet or necklace.

In swahili, "kazuri" means small and beautiful. The craft of painting these ceramic beads began in 1975 in Kenya. Lady Susan Wood set up a small business making beads in a small shed in her back garden. She found that many of the local women were in need of jobs, and transformed the business into a help center for the many disadvantaged women who were in need of work and support.

The beads are handmade with clay from the Mt Kenya area thus giving them authenticity to their craft. The factory acts as a social gathering with the hum of voices continuing throughout the day. With unemployment so high, one jobholder often ends up providing for an "extended family" of 20 or more. Kazuri is a member of the Fair Trade Act.

The beads used in this special mala have been imported from this location in Kenya and give the mala a unique charm, beyond their beautiful colour.

Your mala will arrive carefully gift wrapped and shipped in a padded envelope. I will also include a small note that explains the history behind the beads.
