I turned this natural edge bowl from a piece of American Elm that a tree cutter gave me. The wood surprised me with its beautiful chocolate color and its light weight. American Elm is a hardy tree that is generally used as a shade tree. It was fantastic to turn. I kept the bowl on a lower profile to enhance the long grain. It was turned wet and then dried for a couple of months and then turned to the finished thickness of approximately ¼ inch. The colors range from chocolate to gold and golden browns. The piece measures approximately 10 ¼ inches at the broadest point, by 8 ½ inches and is approximately 4 inches tall at the highest point. I finished the bowl with a cellulose sealer and several coats of lacquer to enhance the grain and increase its durability. While the bowl should not be used for food it makes an attractive piece to hold ornaments, decorative items or as a stand-alone beautiful piece of home décor.
