I developed these blocks when making quilts for a friend's young daughters, because I couldn't find this size of block anywhere. This printable pdf set of files contains illustrated instructions for making a full quilt from repeats of 4 of my easy to medium skill 16" (40cm) square quilt blocks. They are based on 4-patch blocks and designed so that you can use them in any combination to make smaller or larger quilts, longer or shorter quilts, than the one shown here; and oblongs instead of squares! This pattern is suitable for cottons and other medium to light non-stretch fabrics. The files will be emailed to your address within Etsy automatically upon payment for your purchase.

The default set of 4 blocks is as shown in the main photo on a nursery quilt (individual blocks, see other photos):
Diamond (outer corners of example quilt, photo2) based on Square on Point block,
Nested Square (top and bottom centre blocks of example, photo3) based on Framed Sqaure and bright Hopes,
Quartered Square (left and right centre blocks of example, photo 4) and
Centrepiece/Name blocks, comes with 3" alphabet! (centre of example quilt and last photo).

These make big simple blocks which are fairly quick to put together- you could even do a whole quilt in a weekend (assuming the rest of real life kindly holds off from disturbing your sewing! OK, I admit that's unlikely- but they are relatively easy to use).

If you would like other patterns as a 16" block or to substitute one of my own design patterns in this list please contact me to arrange this. This pattern requires some basic sewing skills with a machine or by hand, and is an easy to medium level of difficulty. The default size using 9 blocks makes a good-sized square unsashed quilt about 5 feet on a side (150cm) suitable for a single or even double bed, or as a comforter or nursery quilt (see main photo).

The file includes all photos diagrams and instructions for making the templates, cutting and sewing the pieces, sashing and combining the blocks to make a full quilt. Please note you will need paper and a ruler/setsquare or graph/squared paper to make the paper pattern pieces, but they are easy to do! It prints on A4 or US letter and is useable in black and white so no special paper or printer is needed (please specify which size on your computer when printing at home, but it should work on either size).

You can use this pattern file forever to make your own quilts (and even sell them as part of your handmade quilts provided you acknowledge me/my shop as the pattern designer). Please do not make resell or otherwise share multiple copies of the file or prints of the pattern, as this is against Etsy's very fair rules and my permission. If you can't print it and would prefer a paper copy of everything please see the conversion listing to also buy. You can then choose whether you prefer to recieve a printed copy or CD ROM disc by post. Thanks!

Frequently asked questions about JezDesignsCrafts

Most folks asking this have not realised that I am in a different country to them. Please double check my location: I am in the UK, so if you are not, this means items have to get to you via airmail. Airmail is based on weight and quite costly compared to land shipping; I choose the best balance of cost and speed for most customers. The shipping charge includes, packaging, postage, any fees I am charged on the transaction, my time and fuel to get to the post office or courier. Many listings also include an optional upgrade with tracking, or courier services.
Please check my other shop policies- but the short answer is no, as I make small numbers and one-offs, like many Etsy sellers. I can sometimes offer a small discount on grouped orders (3-7 items usually) of very similar things, and will always refund any excess combined shipping if it is significantly over the actual cost.
I live in the first world (the UK) and make custom items in small numbers. The price has to cover my time, costs and skill as well as the fabric as I try to pay my bills this way. Large textile factories use cheap labour to make very large numbers of the same item, which means they can charge much less. But then they will not be able to make single custom items for you.
If you are looking for something standard, there are commercial resellers of these items. For larger cheaper batches see the wholesalers within Etsy (new feature). If you are interested in whether your items are made by a fairly paid workforce, buy Fairtrade, or checkout the many websites which discuss this issue.
Please check the processing time on the listing you bought, and the shipping tab for typical shipping times. Postal services have been particularly variable in the USA in the last 2 years and small or large parcels can be very fast, or take over 5 weeks to arrive. I have no control of this, sorry. If the time of arrival matters or the item is over about $30 I recommend you upgrade to tracked and insured shipping so at least we have some way to get USPS to look for the parcel.

So far, no US parcel of mine has been completely lost but a very small number have got stuck or lost in customs or been sent on to random 3rd countries before eventually turning up. Please be patient and chase USPS.
