MATERIAL: silvertone metal, glass cabochon.

DATE: possibly early 20th century.

DESCRIPTION:

This beautiful Chinoiserie style hair comb has a double sided heading which is decorated in relief with the same motifs as the front. On the left side we see a dragon and facing him an exotic bird, possibly a stork or crane. A circular faux jade cabochon is set into the center. On the back is a cartouche with the signature of the maker (?)

As the emblem of the Emperor and the Imperial command, the legend of the Chinese Dragon permeates the ancient Chinese civilization and shaped their culture until today. The Chinese Dragon, or Lung, symbolizes power and excellence, valiancy and boldness, heroism and perseverance, nobility and divinity. A dragon overcomes obstacles until success is his. He is energetic, decisive, optimistic, intelligent and ambitious. Unlike the negative energies associated with Western Dragons, most Eastern Dragons are beautiful, friendly, and wise. They are the angels of the Orient. Instead of being hated, they are loved and worshipped.

MORE INFORMATION:

This very unusual style in combs dates from the latter part of the reign of Victoria. This was an extremely eclectic period of history, when not only the past but many other cultures were plundered to provide inspiration for the designers of personal ornaments and the applied arts. There was a positive rage for the arts of China and Japan in the late 19th century. The taste for Chinese-influenced design is generally know as chinoiserie. It is shown in headings with oriental motifs such as curling dragons, lotus, figures of sages and pagodas.
