two great bow brooches came from today's estate expedition, a four leaf clover brooch and this one. the heart is cut from shell, or more exactly, the operculum of a snail shell. that's my word of the month after i spent some time on the beach in Maui collecting tiny operculums (operculi???) and then had to find out what they are. basically, they are little doors some species of snails can use to seal themselves up in order to not dry out. clever! and i love anything with a spiral, which this operculum happens to have on the back side. surely there's a bit of magic in it!
lovely brooch in good vintage condition. hangs about 1 and 3/4". bow is 1 and 3/8" wide.
