This square shawl is made out of Austermann Merino lace - 100% merino lace, a lace weight, 2 ply wool.

The shawl is made in the same way as the traditional Shetland hap shawls, which could originally have been made out of anything from wool even finer than this, through to quite heavy, Aran wool. There is a centre square of garter stitch (knit every row). Around that, there is a decorative border; here, I've used the tried and tested Old Shale (feather and fan). Outside of that, there is a final border that allows the edges to be blocked straight.

The shawl is approximately 34 inches per side (that's how it was blocked; it may shrink a bit as it rests). It's worn folded into either a triangle, across the middle (as modeled by Paul the Phrenology head) or folded in less than (or more than, depending on how you look at it) a triangle - the shallower the fold, the longer the shawl!

As with most of these shawls, it will fit through a wedding ring - the shawl weighs less than 50 gr. It's very light, and you won't really notice you're wearing it - but everyone else will! It's light enough to bunch up as a scarf, but large enough to cover your shoulders, and provide a bit of warmth on a summer's night. It's just over 34 inches along each side.

(You can see how it looks when folded over by examining the photos where it's modeled so well by Paul - the Phrenology head!).

(Hand wash, block when wet - if you have to wash this, or it gets very wet, please feel free to get back in touch for discussion of how to block it).
