Gorgeous sloped wooden writing desk! So very Jane Austen!!
* Circa 19th century.
* Polished Rosewood finish.
* Mother of Pearl inlay.
* Many accessories included.

Fold out lap desks like this were used as portable desks throughout the 18th and 19th century for war letters and travel by men and women alike. You would take such a desk to your country home to write to friends, or place on a table at home to write to your beloved gone to war.

The writing area folds down to reveal a velvet writing surface and storage compartment. Included is a list of family names ("Bacot"?) dated 1877 written in calligraphy that was found stuck up inside of the desk. Many small compartments with ALL the original lids hold the included writing accessories and key. (Though the key fits in the lock, I have not been able to make the mechanism work.)

* Two lidded glass ink wells. One with the original cork, one without.
* Three quill pen nibs. Two are marked "Joseph Cillot's" and one is marked "Perry & Co. London".
* Thin wooden pencil. Marked "A.W. Faber No 4." This antique pencil is in excellent condition and has never been sharpened! An interesting and rare pencil!
* Ivory quill knife/eraser. This particular knife dates sometime from 1830s to the 1890s and has an ivory handle! The blade end is for cutting and sharpening quills for writing. The ivory handle is flattened on the end for use as an eraser to scratch ink from the page. Case is marked "J. Rodgers & Sons Sheffield." Blade is marked "Rodgers. Cutlers to Her Majesty." Her Majesty refers to Queen Victoria. The makers mark is a plus sign and an asterisk. In excellent condition! This is quite the find!!

In beautiful condition, but there are some minor imperfections, so please look closely at the pictures, ask questions if you have any. And please message me you email address to request more pictures if you would like. I have PLENTY more pictures of this gorgeous desk!

This lap desk is one of a kind! It truly is a treasure and is only being sold to downsize for a move. Highly sought after by collectors! Certain to be a great addition to any period decor! For use or display!
