This listing is for 16 ounces (one POUND) of UNWASHED, raw, Merino/Shetland - Romney cross ewe's wool, shorn in May of this year and properly stored. This is another one of these wonderful crossbred sheep that has a fleece that is an absolute delight in it's uniqueness! This fiber is soft to the touch, very different in its texture, the closest I can come to describing it is a cross between cotton, silk, and wool. It is a very dense wool, yet there is a degree of loft to it, but still a bit of luster in the sunlight - so unusual! There is a high lanolin count, but it washes up amazingly easy. I have included a picture of a couple of washed locks in the measure picture (to the right of the photo). It washes up EXTREMELY white and easily, this fiber would be appropriate even for beginning washers! The crimp is the open wavy type, with some variation in the fleece to an almost curly crimp, I have pictured several locks from throughout the fleece. The lock structure is not extremely distinct, but the tips are nicely curled. The average staple is running right about 3.5", with range of 3.25"-3.75", a pretty consistent fleece. It responds well to multiple prep methods, hand cards, drum carder, flick carding, combs, it isn't fussy at all! This fiber seems to just want to spin up finer, and the resulting yarn is absolutely to die for, very soft and drapey! This fleece also took dye wonderfully, very deep and vibrant colors. I can see this wool making the most awesome winter hat, perhaps a beret with it's great "slouching" ability?!? It is soft to the touch, and I would say it should be "next-to-skin" for most anyone. I'm going to classify the VM as low moderate on this fleece, for the most part it is very clean, but there are some occasional larger hay pieces that will need to be plucked out. This fleece is professionally shorn (few shortcuts), there is NO leg, britch, etc. very heavily skirted (NO BURRS - STICKS - MUD - OR TAGS). I stake my reputation on providing well described, quality fiber - you won't end up throwing half of this away. This is unwashed fiber that has not been processed in any way beyond normal, heavy skirting procedures. I am a veteran spinner who strives to supply quality fiber for fellow handspinners, that I would and do spin myself. All photos show the actual fiber you will receive and the actual amount is pictured in the basket. I also provide an instruction sheet detailing my wool washing method, at no charge, for anyone who purchases one of my listings , just let me know in a message that you would like one and whether you prefer a PDF emailed to you or a print copy included with your fiber.
