This amazing and rare hand-embroidered and beaded German Folk Shawl is probably from around the year 1900. It appears to be rich black silk satin, the old fashioned kind which has an almost velvety feel or could be a brushed cotton of some kind, I am not certain. I cannot find a flaw anywhere on this piece; if there is it is something very minor that I happen to have missed. The top edge is unfinished but there is no fraying that I can see.

One of the things which is so wonderful about the piece is how obviously hand-stitched it is in places; one has the feeling that an indulgent and loving grandmother spent years of time on creating this. There are literally thousands of tiny beads and stitches. The beads themselves are silver in color. The golden yellow used for the hand-stitching is velvety and plush. The tassels all appear to be in good shape and are made from a lovely satin thread. The back of the piece has been waxed where the hand-stitching is to give it strength, perhaps one of reasons it has stayed in such great condition for over a hundred years.

It feels wonderfully luxurious draped across the shoulders and would be elegant and amazing with a simple black, gold or silver dress. I am sure there is a stylish woman out there reading this who will know exactly how to wear it. It would also make a wonderful piece of home decor, perhaps for the wall or thrown across a chair.

An heirloom quality and one-of-a-kind, conversation piece.

It is approximately 51" x 33.8" x 33.8" (130 cm x 86 cm x 86 cm)

This beautiful shawl will be sent to you from Berlin, well packed, with a tracking number.
