Ameliaranne and the Green Umbrella was first book in the Ameliaranne series. This copy, published by Macrae-Smith in 1920, but is listed as being the 7th printing. I know that later editions were noted inside the book starting in 1924, so this book was probably printed somewhere between 1920 to 1923.

The book is laid out in a rather unusual manner -- there is a page with text that is framed with two black-and-white illustrations, and the opposing page is a color plate illustration. Then there are two pages that are blank except for a single black-and-white drawing on the page. This publication feature causes the book to be 121 pages long.

A charming story of Ameliaranne, "a pale child with black hair which she wore in curl rags from Friday night till Sunday morning," whose mother was was poor and took in washing, this is a great early copy of the introductory story to this beloved series.

BOOK CONDITION

The green cloth cover has fading and soiling, with a slight ripple in the cloth cover along the top part of the book. The tips are bumped and there is wear on the edges.

The interior has an ownership inscription inside the front cover. The front cover is ever so slightly loosened from the text block, and the plain endpapers have age-related tanning. I noted a few very small closed tears at the bottom of pages, but the majority of this book is clean and unmarked. I did note some rumpling along the edge of the last 10 pages, but it does not impact the text or illustrations. There is very little age-related tanning to the pages, and the illustrations are clean and clear.
