One of my customers is a marine biologist and she donated this seashell for me to cast. I love interesting shapes, and I thought this would be perfect for summer. I had this piece cast in recycled anti-tarnish sterling silver and just added a little jumpring to it.

As you know, I always look for a place to put a gem, and the shell had one flat spot (there was originally a hole there but it got closed up with silicone for casting) which fit a pear shape. I didn't want to solder a setting onto it, so I opted for a cabochon instead. This black opal worked perfectly. The opal is Australian, not a doublet or triplet, not treated in any other way. I did have to glue it in - there was just no other way to keep it in place. It's safe, believe me, it will only come off it you soak it in acetone. You can dump it in silver cleaner if you like. It won't do anything to it. Just don't leave it in too long since any opal is part water and more sensitive than other stones.

The pendant is about 15mm long, 20 with the bail. The chain is 16 inches, but I also have 18 inches. Or you can use your own chain (I'll refund you $20 via paypal).

Opal is the birthstone of October.
