RESERVED FOR DREAMS OF BAROQUE

*a portion of this sale will go to benefit the victims of Hurricane Sandy*

Antique harness horse bridle from the late 1800s. Heavy leather with blinkers, browband, remains of the throatlatch, and a bit: a typical straight bar snaffle driving bit with large rings and heavy bar. Used, most likely, on a great big draft horse who worked the fields during the week and drove the family into town come Sundays. Found hanging on a nail in an old horse stall in a very, very old barn that was filled with farm implements. It's incomplete: missing the throatlatch, no reins attached to the bit rings.

Use for home decor, wall hanging, a great antique from the rustic, rural, primitive past.

26" total length from top of headstall
23" length from top of headstall to bit
16" browband 12" wide x 8" high x 7" deep
6.5" width of bit

The leather has been freshly conditioned and cleaned with saddle soap — not to take off its marvelous, old, mellow surface but to give it some suppleness and get the dust off. It has a bit of shine to it and the leather has a beautiful dark russet color. White stitching. The bit is rusty and again, not meant to be put in Dobbin's mouth. The leather was repaired and repaired again over the course of more than a hundred years: there's very old tape across one strap on top of a buckle, which I've left intact.
