Celebrate Atari's 40 year anniversary by playing an Atari-CX 2600A ("Stella")! This one's ready to plug in and play! Atari got its start in 1972, but didn't get started selling Atari Videogame consoles until 1977 with the introduction of Atari's VCS (Video Computer Systems. The VCS was originally ready to ship in 1976, however due to a legal clause in an earlier settlement between Atari and Magnavox over the release of PONG in 1972, Magnavox would own the rights to anything Atari produced for 1 year, so Atari delayed the VCS release so that Magnavox would not own the rights to it.

The Atari 2600 was technically superior to most of the other game systems when it was released. The original Atari 2600 is referred to as "The Heavy Sixer" due to its heavy weight and its 6 selection switches on the front of the console. An interesting note about the Atari 2600 and 2600A is that about 75% of the console case is EMPTY. The motherboard of the Atari 2600 is a rather small and simple design. Most of the interior of the case is empty. This console by itself only weighs 2 lbs. 10 oz.

Many people familiar with Atari are aware of the stories of Atari products being codenamed after females who worked for Atari. The Atari 400 was codenamed Candy, the Atari 800 was codenamed Colleen, the Atari 5200 was codenamed PAM and there are many other codenames for other Atari products. The Atari 2600 Video Computer System was not named after an Atari female, but instead after one of the original engineer's bicycle.
