NEW! Fabulous recycled sari silk yarn with low twist to reduce tangles. Super Premium is my thinnest recycled sari silk yarn; Premium, Art, and Uncarded are progressively larger.
This listing is for two hanks of Super Premium handspun recycled sari silk yarn. Each skein weighs about 100 grams, for a total of approx. 200 grams (7 ounces). Each hank is about 155-160 yards. You will receive the exact skeins shown in the photos, both for just $15. If you've been frustrated by sari silk yarn in the past, give my Super Premium a try - it's soft, smooth, and easy to work with.

For a slightly bulkier yarn, see my "Premium" recycled sari silk yarn. If you like lots of texture, see my "Art Yarn." For fiber art, check out my bulky Uncarded silk yarn and Sari Ribbon. I can fit 2000 - 2400 grams of yarn into a Flat Rate Box, which ships anywhere in the US, insured, for just $12.80. My silk yarn is handspun by a women's collective in Nepal whom I've worked with for years; your purchase helps these women escape poverty and send their children to school. The beautiful Nepali baby in the last photo, attired in traditional costume for his "rice ceremony," illustrates how choosing to buy fair trade products positively impacts the lives of workers in developing countries - this adorable fellow probably would not exist if his mother hadn't been able to earn a good wage making recycled silk ribbon and yarn (more info on her story, below).

This recycled yarn is top quality. Compared to lower-grade recycled silk yarn, the diameter and twist are more consistent throughout the skein and it is soft, smooth, and clean. As with all recycled silk yarn, it may not be completely colorfast when wet - I recommend handwashing separately in cold water with a gentle detergent. If needed, use a bit of fabric softener to maintain softness. If you have severe allergies to metal, then it may be best to avoid recycled silk yarn due to the fact that it may contain tiny amounts of metallic thread, a popular embellishment for saris.

Please note, the shipping rates quoted below are for USPS First Class. For a small additional fee, I can ship by Priority Mail instead [within the US, Priority shipping for this item costs $4.90]. International buyers: convo me for a shipping quote if your country is not listed below, if you prefer Priority service, or if you wish to purchase multiple items.

Returning to the subject of fair trade - in recent years, this term is often used by importers who don't actually know exactly where their products come from, nor whom they are made by. I work directly with the women's collective that makes my recycled sari silk yarn and ribbon; they are not just business partners, but friends. The income they have earned by supplying my Etsy shop has made a huge difference in their lives, and I sincerely thank everyone who has supported us. Etsy sales allowed me to arrange for medical care for a member of the women's collective who experienced a very difficult pregnancy - thanks to emergency surgery by an American doctor, all ended well and her son is now a healthy toddler. I met him a few months ago (promptly collapsing into tears) and seeing his smiling face erased all doubts I'd had about the wisdom of abandoning a reasonably lucrative career in the apparel industry for the meager profits of fair trade handicrafts.
