My late husband loved collecting Early American pewter. This is a fine example of an unusual vintage set in wonderful condition. There are 4 glass containers: pewter-topped salt and pepper shakers, a jam, honey or herb container with lid and spoon, and a glass-stoppered oil or vinegar jar. The pewter holder has a handle and revolves on its base.
It does have a stamp on the top of the pewter: Manhattan Silver Plate, quadruple plated. Although it says silverplate, I am pretty sure that this is pewter; I understand that it was not unusual for silverplaters to make items out of pewter. Early American pewter is rather rare, as it was melted down to make bullets in the various wars.
The holder stands about 13" high and about 6 3/4" in diameter and would make a nice compact display or actual serving piece. The handle does unscrew and the unit will come apart to make shipping easier, but the glass pieces will require careful packaging. The whole piece is pretty heavy, about 4 lbs 8 oz.
