The David Andersen Company of Norway is synonymous with rich, color-saturated basse-taille enameling on sterling silver as well as gilded sterling. This iconic vintage water lily set has emerald green leaf pads with white upturned enameled flowers on gilded sterling. It is fully hallmarked on all pieces with the David-Andersen scales logo and “D-A”, as well as “925S” in a circle, “NORWAY STERLING” and “W” in a circle for the designer, Willy Winnaess. Winnaess was David Andersen’s chief designer in the 1950’s. It is a brooch and earring set that has been well-loved, but has suffered some over the years, and my price is a reflection of its enamel issues.

The brooch has a nice appearance overall, but when looking closely there are a couple of areas on the green enameled portion where the clear layer, only, has been penetrated. These are visible mostly at a certain angle. One petal on the upturned flower has cracked enamel close to where it is connected to its flower stem. It is slightly discolored. There is also a much smaller area on the next petal. These look like stress fractures, and may have occurred partially during manufacture. The gilding is still visible, but more so on the back. Care should be taken when cleaning any of these pieces (best done only with a clean, soft cloth) so as to preserve the remaining gold. The pin has a simple C-clasp closure.

The earrings also have a loss of gilding, and more tarnish on the back sides. One earring has a loss of enamel down to the sterling silver next to the flower. It is because of this, that my price for the set is reduced. My pictures show the pieces at various angles so that you can judge for yourself its impact. It is an exciting set to behold despite its condition issues, and I think, like myself, anyone experiencing them for the first time, might be willing to overlook them. While this set is not necessarily rare, I have been unable to find any for sale currently, a testimony, I think to its true beauty, quality, and appeal. The set is a wonderful example of the Scandinavian Modern style, c. 1950's.

Picture 4 has reflections of the white flowers in the brooch. More pictures are available on request.

This set will be presented in two gift boxes, each with a tarnish resistant pouch.
