Here is an antique French bedspread from early 1900's, in white cotton. In France this kind of bedspread are called "piqué de Marseille", they are original from South of France and were part of the typical dowry of a Provencal bride together with the quilted ones, (called "courtpoint" or not very properly, "boutis") necessary to afford the cold Winter, while these "piqué de Marseille" were used in Spring and Summer.
These kind of bedspread began to be produced during the 2° industrial revolution (Emperor Napoleon III time) because they were much more economical than the old traditional white boutis all hand made with hours and hours of hard work (now really rare and Museum pieces!) with their raised patterns these piquè de Marseille imitate well the true boutis.
This piece is very lovely, in the centre it has an ovale medallion with a stylished pattern which makes me think to a beehive, then is framed by a huge border with stylished bees (or butterflies?) and finally there is another smaller border all around the four sides with a floreal pattern, two sides of the bedspread are scalloped and hand embroidered with dots, the other two sides are trimmed with fringes. The raised pattern is very plumpy, on the reverse side the bedspread is flat, this is an intersting difference which I have noticed among this kind of French bedspreads and the Italian ones, in Italy too these white piqué were popular but ours are different, where the pattern is raised in the right side it is carved in the back side...

The two scalloped sides measure 88" and the sides with fringes are 71 ", conditions are very good, with no stains or offensive odours, this lovely bedspread would bring to your home decor exactly "that" tone of Provencal atmosphere!
