Fèves are tiny porcelain or ceramic charms or figurines which are made to put inside an Epiphany Cake called a "Gallette du Roi".

This long standing tradition here in France is for the cake to be served during the Epiphany holiday which in France called "La fête de l'épiphanie" ou "fête des rois" and is celebrated on January 6th.

Tradition states that this is the day the three wise men came to Bethlehem to honour the baby Jesus.

Prior to the introduction of porcelain feves a bean was used as people were poor.Feve is a word in France for type of bean.

If you are lucky enough to get the feve in your slice of cake, you get to be king for the day and do absolutely nothing all day. The box containing the cake also contains a gold paper crown for the lucky person to wear.
