Pair of mid century modern ceramic plant pots, with a hand-painted green and black bamboo pattern on a white background, by famed Dutch pottery, Royal Sphinx - just the thing to bring the garden indoors and add a little year round greenery to your home or dorm!

Dating from the 1950's, they make a lovely set - add a pot plant to brighten up a room / table / bookshelf, use as a storage pot / desk tidy, or both - flexibility and effortless style all in one!

Royal Sphinx, originally based in the ceramics town of Maastricht, in the Netherlands, was founded in 1836 by Petrus Regout, a local glassmaker. The market, at that time, was for the popular creamy ware produced in England, so Regout imported English craftsmen and even English materials to stay competitive, eventually exporting their household ceramics around the world.

The company adopted the Sphinx logo in 1879 and the name in 1899 - it merged with its largest local competitor, Société Ceramique, in 1958, becoming Royal Sphinx in 1960 but ceased making household earthen ware and pottery in 1969, to focus on the growing market in sanitary ware.

Whilst doing my homework on Royal Sphinx, I unearthed a bit of a mystery surrounding the dates of these pots... Although both have the same bamboo pattern, the smaller pot bears the Société Ceramique stamp, with a lion rampant logo which was in use from 1958-1969, so far so good. The larger pot, however, has a Royal Sphinx stamp, with the Sphinx logo - this logo was in use until the merger in 1958, but the 'Royal' wasn't added until 1960! My best guess is that they both date from 1958 -1960, straddling the merger period.

The plant pots are in excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks, crazing or repairs - there a few original fleabites in the glaze, typical surface wear on the bases and the smaller pot has water marks on the inside.

The larger pot measures 4" high and 4.75" at the widest point.
The smaller pot measures 3.75" high and 4.25" at the widest point.
