This is an old bento box. I believe it is Japanese, but am really unsure. The trays seem to be laquer over thick molded paper on the outside and wood on the inside. The handle feels like wood, too. This was tucked away in my Nan's home and this is the first time I have seen it so I am unsure of the age. There are two chips on the top tray where the paper is showing through (see pictures) and some of the paint on the handle has come off. The designs on the trays are carved into the paper and highlighted with gold paint. The colors are beautiful - dark green and deep orange. The top tray is inlaid with a large piece of painted porcelain or ceramic. The entire piece measures 6-1/4" tall, 6-3/4" x 4" across. The inside of the trays measure 3-1/4" x 5-1/4" across. The lid measures 1-1/4" deep. The middle tray measures 1" deep. The bottom tray measures 1-1/4" deep. I am unsure if this is food safe, so probably best used as a display piece or maybe a jewelry box!
