Yeast are an extremely diverse and useful group of microorganisms that are crucial to making beer, wine and bread, among other things that make life worth living. Yeast reproduce asexually by an asymmetric division process called budding, which is what the ones in this painting are doing. In budding, a small bud emerges from the surface of the parent cell and enlarges until it is almost the size of the parent. It looks really cool under a microscope.

This original watercolor of budding yeast was painted using a three-part technique. I painted the background first in very light blue, then let that dry and added the yeast shapes. After that dried, I went back and added the emerging buds. In soft but vivid shades of yellow, pink, blue, green and purple, this would be perfect for your lab, office, kitchen, or for any space that needs a bit of geeky whimsy.

Painted on Arches cold press watercolor paper with Winsor & Newton watercolors.

Overall size 18 x 24 inches, including white mat and backing board. Standard size for easy framing. Signed. Absolutely unique!
