This one-of-a-kind, hand-painted art assemblage depicts a venerable Hindu holy man with wisdom in his eyes and love in his heart. He is set in a frame decorated to look like a South Asian religious shrine. Flanked by sacred OM symbols under a banner that says "Jaya Gurudeva Om" in Sanskrit (Salutations to the Spiritual Teacher), with scattered flower petals beneath his feet, you can almost smell the incense, feel the meditative energy, and hear him expound upon the teachings of the Vedas as he beholds you with his wise, penetrating gaze. He holds the whole world (in miniature) in his hand.

Babaji is meticulously created in acrylic paint on crushed beverage cans, as are the decorations on the easel frame to which he is affixed. The white-bearded sage wears renunciant robes, prayer beads and a long white beard. The doors of the frame open and close as shown.

"Babaji" measures approximately 6-1/4" high x 9-1/2" wide with the doors open (7" wide with the doors closed) x 2" deep. He may be placed on a shelf or mounted on the wall (hardware included). The frame's easel footprint when open is 5-1/2".

Crushed can art is a long and labor-intensive process that begins with finding aluminium beverage cans that have been flattened by vehicles. I thoroughly clean and prepare the cans for painting and assemblage, never knowing at first what they will become. The cans themselves "tell" me who they are when I add a base coat of artist's medium; only then do I begin to paint the characters in brightly colored acrylics, based on the lines and shapes of each can, sometimes adding new or recycled frames, my own painted backgrounds, embellished photographs, fabric and other found objects. No two creations are alike, and natural "imperfections" in the upcycled materials add to the uniqueness of each piece.

After the painting is complete, each can receives several coats of varnish to ensure that your original work of art will be enjoyed for many years to come.

"Babaji" makes a wonderful gift for those who honor and revere the teachings of the Mystical East or their East Indian heritage. It would make a wonderful gift for a yoga teacher or practitioner, a collector of sacred art, for a student of Eastern or comparative religions. Or display "Babaji" on your personal altar as a reminder of our true nature, the inner peace and innate wisdom that is always available to us.

Customized crushed can creations from photographs and special requests are also available. Inquire for details.
