This is a wonderful item. These bookmark sized cards, ( this one, approximately 1 and 3/4s by 5 and 1/2 inches) were common enough in late Victorian and Edwardian times. They were also plentiful enough in France, but many fewer exist by their numbers published than postcards. Why? Well, we can only suppose that their size and shape made them more likely to be lost or damaged.
This card probably dates to the early 1900s, and is graced by the image of the ever charming Madge Lessing, an Englishwoman who apparently ran away from home to become an actress, and accomplished her goal with great success. The back of the card is imprinted with an Eastern European language, indicating that Miss Lessing's popularity extended beyond the UK and America, where she was very well known. Below is a link to another Madge Lessing card in our shop. What a gorgeous smile.

Here is another link, to a website offering an excerpt from a 1906 book of "Stage Diva's" with considerable information on this actress. Wonderful stuff. Enjoy.
