My husband makes these support spindle bowls on our lathes, and this one is made from rosewood - it's a lovely species with a color similar to cocobolo or pink ebony, but it has more open grain, with some areas of color variation. This support spindle bowl is 2 1/8" in diameter at the top, 6" tall, with a 3/4" spinning depth. Due to its open grain on this particular piece of wood, there are areas where the grain is slightly raised, and there is some "checking" on the base of the bowl (quite common in hardwoods - lines where the wood has dried and slightly separated - not true cracks, but they can be seen and felt - we polish and treat with both Danish oil and friction polish which contains shellac, to stabilize the wood).

Rosewood takes on a wonderful sheen when polished on the lathe - this particular piece of wood also has some chatoyance, similar to verawood. This bowl was designed to match one of our small, very lightweight traditional style Russian support spindles. The chalice-style bowls are designed to be used while spinning in a chair, for those who wear pants or slacks - you simply place the bowl between your legs/thighs.

All spindles are made and stored in a smoke-free environment. 100% guarantee! Shipping is by USPS Priority Mail or International First Class Mail, and I do combine shipping for multiple purchases.
