This is an exquisite piece made by Steve Smith or Karon Hia Te (Standing Sky) of the Turtle Clan of the Mohawk Nation, Haudenosaunee and the Six Nation Reserve, Canada. I estimate this piece was made sometime in the 1980's and is very reflective of a traditional form of the pottery designs of the Haudenosaunee. It is wheel thrown and skillfully carved and finished with an iron oxide wash that gives it a rich, slightly metallic brown finish unlike a glossy glazed or painted finish. Steve's current works are more complex, contemporary in overall style and sgraffito polychrome- this piece reflects his earlier, simpler works which cleverly combine modern techniques (being wheel thrown) and ancient design elements and the natural colors of the earth and thus is highly collectible. This pot also shows the influence of his parents, the late Elda and Oliver Smith, who were a part of a small group that reintroduced this lost art form to many current Haudenosaunee pottery artists. It has a pure style and quiet, earthy elegance that would appeal to a variety of tastes, from traditional to mid century modern decor.

This piece measures approximately 7.75" high by 7.25" wide at it's widest part, 4.25" across at the top of this vessel (at the rim).

It is in excellent condition and has been well cared for in a private collection- no chips, cracks or damage.

As most experienced buyers of vintage and antique items will know, most objects have some signs of wear and use if you look very closely. I am vary careful to photograph and describe any of these condition issues in the listing.

Some items have some imperfections that have always been with the object- they were created or manufactured that way! I try to point these issues out as well.

If you have any questions- just inquire. I will try to clarify any of these issues for you.

Thank you!
I am willing to make special arrangements to ship most items internationally providing that it is legal to do so and that the buyer is willing and able to communicate with me so I can make those arrangements. Though I can understand and can communicate in many languages, I prefer you have a good understanding of English in order to understand the subtleties and details in making these arrangements. Sometimes the procedure is simple but sometimes more complex.

Most importantly, I ask that the buyer be fully aware that shipping and customs procedures may take up to several weeks and agree to that situation before making the purchase and my making the special arrangements.
I will be happy to combine the shipping of multiple purchases when possible. Some larger or more fragile items may have to be shipped separately to insure they arrive in good condition. If you have any questions just contact me for more information.
