This piece is for the seafaring soul in each of us, though some of us landlubbers live far from the sea.

While serving a tour in Vietnam (a very long time ago), I had the good fortune of meeting and getting to know a young man from Maine, who was indeed a seafaring soul (have no idea how he ended up in the infantry).

That particular year a very powerful typhoon swept across the South China Sea and created havoc in the islands, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. I remember his comment upon hearing of the upcoming storm. "It looks like the beginning of a big blow!", he calmly said. Since then, each time a hurricane hits the Caribbean, Florida or the Gulf of Mexico, that statement comes to mind. Now with the advent of the hurricane season, I thought it might be an opportune time to dedicate this artwork to that idea.

The sun still shines before being consumed by the dark storm clouds overhead as well as on the horizon. The windjammers are making for the nearest safe harbor while the wind fills the sails and whips the flags aboard ship and at the lighthouse.

Whitecaps, airborn gulls fighting the wind, the surf beating the spit of land where the lighthouse is located, finish this nautical scene.

This original composition was drawn, hand-burned(not laser-burned) onto a specifically chosen wood plaque, finished with two hand-rubbed coats of tung oil and his ready to proudly display in your favorite spot.

Creative time includes idea development, research, wood acqusition and preparationk, sketching, woodburning, clean-up, finish application (x2), installing hanger and totals 29 hours.

Additional close-up photos show the hours of detail and shading that went into the creation of this piece.
