This silk scarf is made of Uzbek ikat fabric traditionally produced in Margilan, Ferghana Valley. This type of silk is called 'shoyi'; it is very thin and almost weightless, like dried flower petals, but very strong and drapes beautifully. It is pure mulberry silk produced in Uzbekistan from silk cocoons processed manually.

This fabric reminds me of a page from a very old book - a page made of parchment, yellowed with age, with tiny wrinkles and faded colors. This is an expensive silk, very unique and beautiful.

The pattern is lovely, and the most amazing thing is that it is woven, not printed. It is not printed: instead, the threads are dyed in the variegated fashion based on complicated calculation so that to make them self-patterning. As the fabric is woven using primitive narrow wooden looms, the pattern appears as if by magic.

Actually I thought it were pomegranates, but then I realized they were probably tulips. However I like pomegranates more, and they are right in time for the upcoming season, so let them be pomegranates for me, and whatever you like for you.

Uzbek silk may be less famous than Thai silk - to a large extent due to the isolation of the country in the Soviet Union time - but it is not less beautiful, although they are different. Ikat patterns are somewhat reminiscent of what you can see in Mexican or Thai fabrics.

The size of scarf is 180 x 40 cm (70 x 16 inches) and it has no fringe.

The hems are meticulously finished by my mother with a delicate machine stitch. As a rule, Uzbek silk scarves come unfinished, and just have a fringe, but no stitch to protect the edges. I prefer to finish the edges with a thin silk thread to feel confident that the scarf will last. This scarf does not have a fringe; just rolled edges.

Dry clean is preferable. However you can also hand wash it in cold water with a mild detergent (shampoo will do).

If you like this fabric and would like to have a blouse, tunic or top from it, feel free to place a custom order. We will be delighted to work on it. You can see our Clothing section (http://www.etsy.com/shop/MulberryWhisper?section_id=11167451) for examples.

My great grandmother's bucket is for display only.

We can custom make pillow covers, scarves or clothing (or about anything of Uzbek silk and cotton) for you, in desired size and color.

Our items are made by hand, in very limited quantity: no mass production here and we do not exploit anyone. We are a mother and a daughter team who do what they enjoy most.

Silk ikat should be dry cleaned. In theory, it can be hand washed cold with a mild detergent, but dry clean is preferred. Crepe de chine and silk chiffon can be hand washed cold.

Occasionally you can see some irregularities in the silk fabric, such as slubs or uneven dye. We feel that they provide extra character to the items and do not mind. However, if you do mind, these items might not be for you. Please bear in mind that these are handmade fabrics, and they are produced in Uzbekistan in a rather primitive way.

...In the last picture you can see me buying vintage silks in Bukhara, one of the most beautiful cities of the Orient and an important part of the Great Silk Road. We are based in Uzbekistan, and due to that we have direct access to wonderful silk fabrics, both vintage or modern.
