This pair of antique dessert plates is incredibly beautiful. They are hand painted, one with a bunch of violets, the other with a sprig of crabapple or cherry blossom, and what's even more wonderful is that they are signed and dated "1914" on the reverse.

The painting is beautifully done and complemented perfectly by a pale green band around the scalloped rim of the plates. There appears to be a pale pink stain on each plate opposite the flowers, but it harmonizes so well that we can imagine it was intentional!

The plates themselves were made by the Moritz Zdekauer/Altrohlau company of Austria, which provided blanks for china painters. (China painting was a very popular hobby for turn of the century ladies.) Just exquisite.

Marked MZ Austria with double-headed eagle
Made of porcelain
Measures about 7.75 inches
Condition: some wear to the paint and glaze from stacking of the plates; what may be a rosy stain on each plate; one has two tiny fleabite chips under the rim (please see last two photos); otherwise excellent
