Day of the Dead tin nicho with doors features an articulated skeleton, dancing and waving a sombrero, as he peeks out of slightly ajar, 'wooden' closet doors. The skeleton is loose inside the diorama and may be positioned different ways by rotating the nicho. Tiny mirrored accents illuminate an alcove within the diorama which is set under glass.

The nicho's exterior, hinged doors (which may be opened or closed) are vividly painted on both sides with flowers, leaves and vines. Below the doors, at the base of the nicho, a plaque reads: "A Skeleton in Every Closet." Even the back of the nicho features a brightly painted, rimmed surface with the same design motifs.

At the top of the embossed tin frame is a scalloped crest with an applied clay skull accent. The glass is intact and the piece is in wonderful vintage condition. Metal loop on reverse for hanging. Measures approximately 10.5" high x 7.25" wide x 1.5" deep.

From the colonial folk art workshop of "Cielito Lindo Estudio, San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato. Hecho a mano en México" (Hand made in Mexico). Colorful, contemporary memento of Mexico's decorative tin smithing tradition, circa late 20th century.

Día de Muertos is a holiday celebrated in México to remember family and friends who have passed on. This tradition of lighthearted humor in the face of life and death takes place each year on November 1st and 2nd and incorporates sugar skulls, marigolds, ofrendas (altars) and candlelight vigils.
